Zhuge Liang's Golden Secret for Divining Travelers
On Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches
To speculate whether a traveler will come, carefully arrange the time and day. When the hour's origin combines with and generates the day's origin, if restrained by the day's branch, the army returns. It is also favorable when the hour's branch serves as the day's horse; when the day's branch combines with the horse, the return occurs at the hour. If the hour's horse is linked to the day's branch, the tomb in the branch and stem determines the return date. Most taboo are interception emptiness and punishment/tomb; death and extinction often correspond to scarce news. The day's and hour's Na Yin indicate the person's departure or stay. If Na Yin generates and combines, the journey has begun. If the hour's Na Yin overcomes the day's stem's Na Yin, the traveler is like a swift steed in Wuling. If the stem's Na Yin overcomes and controls the hour's Na Yin, although wishing to set off, fear of traveling persists. Further examine the Lin Guan (Imperial Office) to divinate the Post Horse; observe the San He (Three Harmony) of time and day to discern the sentiment of return.
Annotation by Sanfu Fengyun Yong: It is most appropriate when the hour generates the day; this represents movement generating stillness, the guest generating the host, and the image of arrival. Also, when the hour's branch is the day's horse, or the hour's branch combines with the day's horse, it indicates the horse ridden by the other party, which is an image of coming. For example, if the day's branch uses Yin, Shen, Si, Hai as the horse, and the hour's branch obtains Yin, Shen, Si, Hai or Hai, Si, Shen, Yin, it all indicates an image of coming. In this way, the tomb in the branch and stem is used for the return period. In the divination of travelers, one should avoid Lu Kong Wang (Road Emptiness), Xing (Punishment), Mu (Tomb), Si (Death), and Jue (Extinction), all of which indicate non-arrival and difficulty in contact. Regarding Na Yin divination, Yang Metal combining with Yin Wood indicates coming. Yin Metal overcoming Yin Wood indicates not coming. If the day's Na Yin overcomes the hour's Na Yin, it is merely a desire to move rather than true movement. One must also look for Lin Yi Ma (Post Horse) and Lin Guan. Why examine Lin Guan? Because the Lin Guan hidden stem obtains the Day Master, allowing the direction to be determined. Ultimately, the day should be determined by San He.
On Zhi Fu (Value Deity)
Zhi Fu deduces the traveler; meeting prosperity and generation ensures satisfaction. In decline, imprisonment, punishment, and overcoming, how can one be pleased? Emptiness lies behind, longing for home. Gou Chen, Bai Hu, Zhu Que, and Teng She meet overcoming and control, causing many delays and disputes. Xuan Wu and Tai Yin, if generating and combining, raise doubts about small阴 (females/hidden matters) hindering the journey. Five Horses, if falling into Tian Yu and Di Yu, the return whip has already brushed the clouds on the ridge.
On Zhi Shi (Value Envoy)
Zhi Shi can determine the traveler's tracks. Door combinations indicate the direction of coming and strong intent to return. Only fear Jing (Shock) and Shang (Injury) and Du (Delusion) and Si (Death); punishment grids,迫 (Pressure), and Fu (Hidden) mean no return trace. Kai, Xiu, Sheng, and Jing, riding Tian Ji, add to stem and deity tomb encounters.
On Ten Stems
The Ten Stems at the hour are those for whom relatives are hoped. When the Use God rides the Horse, it finally approaches. If the Horse is blocked in Guandong, return is not obtained; if the Horse crosses mountains and valleys, joy in seeking each other arises.
On Nine Stars
Nine Stars in North, South, West, and East. Coming prosperous and throwing into generation, dwelling outside. Entering tomb and adding comparison, planning return. The journey ahead is empty and extinct, surely returning to the hut.
On Nine Palaces
Starting from Yuan Fa, asking which direction to go, carefully deduce from the original bureau. Discuss the past, searching for Father and Comparison; this Official and this Day combine to return home.
On Doors and Gates
Doors and gates must combine with the Deity and Door. Time, Day, Post Horse can be searched. Look at what relative is added and approached; adding and combining with the querent evaluates the arrival.
On Three Jia
When the traveler's Meng He has not set out, Zhong Jia opens and the road hosts clouds. Ji Jia values opening and the person arrives. On the Ben Jia, examine the Door and Time. Joy when time and day stems/branches, doors, and deities sit with the Horse coming and Horse going, yet it is distant. Also, if the traveler's Lei Shen (Thunder God) Year and Life generate and combine, and the Jia Door is inside open and not closed, it is a standard for certain arrival.
On Auspicious and Inauspicious Patterns
Fan Shou (Returning Head) and Die Xue (Falling into Hole) have long packed bags. Delays and speed in these involve examining punishment and combination. If Tiger is mad, detained and not returning; if Dragon runs, stumbling and not returning home. Dun Ge (Escape Pattern) combining time and day origins can speak of arrival. Zha Jia (Deceit/Fake) meets Bai Hu and Zhu Que, letters will surely come. She Yao (Snake Dying) means disaster and plague on the road, throwing into the river and hesitating in return plans. Fei Gan (Flying Stem) and Fu Gan (Hidden Stem) indicate bad intentions for return. Fu Gong (Hidden Palace) and Fei Gong (Flying Palace) suggest the guest is in distant wastelands. Da Xiao Ge (Great/Small Patterns) delay time and days; Xing Bei Ge (Punishment/Rebellion Patterns) cause mutual injury. Bai Ru Ying (White Entering荧) means the traveler will arrive; Ying Ru Bai (荧 Entering White) means letters are all lost. Not meeting what need to hope for? Ji Xing (Striking Punishment) has matters obstructing. Entering tomb without injury can be said to arrive at the house. Luo Wang (Net) patterns do not indicate returning home. Fan Fu (Returning/Hidden) and Men Po (Door Broken) must distinguish traveler's distance. If combining with Post Horse in the palace, it reverses to indicate the departing guest entering the hall.
Annotation by Sanfu Fengyun Yong: The Qing Long Fan (Green Dragon Returns) pattern focuses on the character 'Fan' (Return), so encountering it means returning. If meeting punishment, there are obstacles on the road; if meeting combination, being tied down makes it hard to break free. But it always centers on the character 'Gui' (Return), only differing in speed. Tiger mad means running, focusing on the character 'Qu' (Go), thus not returning. Dragon fleeing focuses on the character 'Tao' (Flee), thus fleeing out and not returning. If it is Dun Ge, it means the meaning of Dun Gui (Escape Return), but if combining with Year and Month, staying in another land; if combining with Day and Hour, only then returning to the hometown. This is the difference between internal and external. Also meeting Zha Jia, which implies deceit and falsehood, everything is half-formed, so although not returning, letters come back. She Yao means encountering disaster on the journey and being blocked, thus not returning. Throwing into the river means news is hard to communicate, thus hesitating and pacing. Fei Gan and Fu Gan mean difficulty in meeting, so even returning, there are no good things. Fu Gong and Fei Gong patterns, actions are in the wild, thus in desolate places. Da Ge and Xiao Ge are both obstacles, thus there is blockage, time and days are delayed. Xing Bei Ge definitely indicates injury. Or again, Bai Ru Ying comes; Geng is the road, landing on top of Bing, thus indicating arrival. Ying Ru Bai means Bing lands on Geng, an image of fire being blocked, thus letters are all gone. Ji Xing is not a great disaster, only disliked for having matters. Entering tomb means returning, no injury means auspicious. Tian Wang Si Zhe (Heavenly Net Four Covers), do not travel. Fan Yin and Fu Yin must look at distance; near means fast, far means no. But if Post Horse appears, it is not him coming but the host going.
