Taoist Memorials and Official Documents
(1) Petition Statement. The petition statement, also known as the intention text or blessing petition, is also commonly referred to as a "hand petition" because it is placed in the Taoist priest's hands for recitation. The recitation of the intention text is called "entering the intention," a complete recitation is called "full intention," and a brief recitation of key points is called "half intention." The petition statement is written in black ink on red paper, with its main feature being the two large characters "Petition Statement" written at the beginning. Its content explains the location, time, and purpose of the ritual offering, lists the names of the devout altar masters, and expresses prayers for smooth proceedings. It conveys the high priest's sincere wish to present the memorial according to ritual standards, relying on the merit officials to transmit it, commissioning the generals to protect the altar, and praying for the complete merit of the ritual offering without diminishing divine blessings. List of Souls Liberated by the Subtle Texts of the True Ones
The Primordial Sect Altar. This altar is established for the purpose of commemorating and liberating the souls of the deceased. We humbly state: The Realm of Qinghua and Eternal Bliss is originally the Heaven of Soundlessness and Formlessness. The Palace of Miaoyan in the Eastern Pole houses the Lord of Great Compassion and Great Mercy, who has traversed vast kalpas to save humanity, spreading salvation to the ten directions to relieve the suffering of both humans and deities. Relying on the refuge of mortals and sages, whenever there is submission, a petition must first be presented. Now, according to: Residing in XX Place, XX County, XX Province, People's Republic of China, practicing the Dao, establishing rituals, chanting scriptures to recommend the deceased, the living sponsor XX and his family members wearing mourning attire, Filial relatives and mourners on this day wash their hands, hold incense, and sincerely supplicate to the compassionate Creator. The intention is humbly stated for the main commemoration of the deceased XX, whose true nature is XX (males are called Form Soul, females are called Shu Soul, Daoists are called Xia Ling). The soul's original life was born in XX Year, XX Month, XX Day, XX Hour, enjoying a lifespan of XX years, and passed away at the appointed time in XX Year, XX Month, XX Day, XX Hour, concluding its heavenly mandate. Since the illusion has transformed, the two realms are separated by the netherworld. We cannot see the appearance, but we cannot forget the kindness. Now, cultivating the wondrous fruit to seek aid, we petition to prove benevolent heaven to achieve transformation. From XX Month XX Day to XX Day, we invite yellow-robed and feathered priests to establish the Jade Altar at XX Temple (or the mourning hall). In the altar, twenty-four divisions of divine seats are arranged. Kneeling and chanting: The Supreme Various Categories of Liberating Souls Immortal Scriptures, The High Jade Emperor's Original Conduct Collected Scriptures, bowing and worshipping, The Jade Emperor's Repentance of Forgiving Sins and Bestowing Blessings, Performing various rituals, submitting documents and presenting tables on XX Day at dusk, and releasing food and water at night. The Qingxuan Salvation and Purification Bowl of Food and Water, one hall for commemorating and liberating the main soul, attaching to the local sect. Among them, the souls of ancestors from the past three generations are hoped to hear the scriptures, listen to the Dharma, and ascend to the Immortal Realm. We fervently wish that the Eastern Pole Compassionate Buddha will emit auspicious light to guide them. The True Elder of Nandan will point the cloud path for transcendence, rebirth in the realm of Ultimate Bliss, forever leaving the gates of Fengdu. We further pray for the peace and safety of the entire household, the prosperity of all beings, the auspiciousness of the local area, and the purity of livestock.
