Qi Men Dun JiaAn Overview of Qimen Dunjia System Architecture
A concise map of traditional Qimen Dunjia systems: single-palace divination, using-god divination, step-by-step advancement, full-board divination, secret transmissions, feng shui applications, and date selection. Modern teaching mostly covers prediction; date selection is the hardest branch of the arts. Includes notes on the author's formula-engine project and course.
A Scheme for Deeply Integrating Neural Networks with Qimen Dunjia (Part One)
The computational complexity of Qimen Dunjia: taking a standard Qimen Dunjia chart, it is divided into nine palaces, and the elements within each palace include gods, stars, gates, heaven-plate stems, earth-plate stems, and the nine palaces. Qimen Dunjia has 1080 configurations in total — that is, 1080 variations overall. However, Qimen Dunjia is also affected by year, month, day, and hour. According to the characteristics of Qimen Dunjia chart-drawing, for each palace the internal variations are also 1080. The four pillars (year, month, day, hour) each have corresponding heavenly stems, which map to corresponding palace positions — equivalent to a Cartesian product of four palaces with 1080 elements each, producing a total of 1.360489e+12 variations, roughly one hundred and thirty-six billion…
A Case of Searching for a Lost Object
On the fourth day of the ninth lunar month in the Wuxu year at the noon hour, an ear pick suddenly went missing. I recalled having seen it the day before and suspected it had been swept up and discarded by mistake during cleaning, so I cast a Qimen chart. The hour stem was Bing, which combines with Xin, matching the image of Xin. It fell into the Kan sector with Xuanwu above, and Tianying was also present; yet the monitors on the desk were all on, which did not match a dark yin image, so it was not on the desk. Geng also represents corner brackets and stands, so it should have fallen near the desk leg. Looking at the Kan position, it would be to the north; moreover, the Injury Gate indicates a place of movement, corresponding to the movable speaker under the desk. The hexagram met Fan Yin (reverse chanting), so clashing it at the afternoon hour would recover it swiftly — it had to be under the desk by the leg. Searching there, the result was verified.
The Six Jia
At the summer solstice the sun rises at Yin and sets at Xu; the season is hot, with long days and short nights, so Yin-Wu-Xu correspond to Jia-Yin, Jia-Wu, and Jia-Xu. At the winter solstice the sun rises at Chen and sets at Shen; the season is cold, with short days and long nights, so Shen-Zi-Chen correspond to Jia-Zi, Jia-Wu, and Jia-Shen. Zi and Wu are the two functions of Water and Fire; the Six Jia image the transformations of yin and yang.
Brief Notes Interpreting Liu Ren Ancient Cases with Qimen
Taken from the "One-Word Formula Jade Linked Ring" and the "Shao Yanhe Liu Ren Case Records" 1. Yang Dun configuration 8, Jia-Xu decade, Gui-Wei hour, Shen-You void, Chief Envoy Jing Door, Chief Talisman Tianying. Interpretation: The Heaven-plate Chief Talisman with the Injury Door indicates debt-collecting matters; the Earth-plate Chief Talisman is the first transmission, for collection in the sixth month. The Chief Talisman moves into Dui and becomes void, then moves into the Kan palace; in the twelfth month collection again, encountering Vermilion Bird—disputes and arguments. Within the void there is Six Harmony, so someone mediates peace. Look specifically at the Chief Envoy; the Chief Envoy moves into Kan, and the day stem is also there.

On the Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door in Qimen Dunjia
In Qimen Dunjia there is a teaching of the Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door. The Entering Formula Song says: "When Tianyi joins, women's private yin affairs." The so-called Tianyi joining women's private yin affairs requires the Three Wonders to arrive at the Six Instruments, join the auspicious gates of the Three Wonders with Taichong, Xiaoji, and Congkui—the three Heavenly Gates—and add Chu, Wei, Ding, and Kai—the four Earthly Doors. This is called: for blessings and food, long journeys, and coming and going, all are auspicious. Also, the Complete Collection of Qimen Secret Compendia, in "Withdrawing the Army to Avoid Bandits," says: When the enemy's force presses level and I am not yet strong, withdrawing the army to avoid them—look at the Heavenly Gang. If attached to Meng, hide to the right; for Zhong and Ji, still better hide to the left. Congkui, Xiaoji, Taichong—these earth positions, with heaven above overlapping, are the good directions. Daji, Shenhou, Zifang, Huagai can conceal all things—going there is without harm. In all Qimen classics explaining the Three Gates and Four Doors, they all say: "The Three Gates are Taichong, Xiaoji, and Congkui. The Four Doors are Chu, Wei, Ding, and Kai. In times of urgent difficulty, when there is no time to choose Qimen, add the Monthly General to the correct hour. Looking beneath the three generals and four constructions, they are the Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door—ride that direction and a hundred evils cannot harm." Further, the Complete Liu Ren says: "When the enemy's force presses level and I am not yet strong"—the annotation says: if you encounter bandits on the road, they are strong and I am weak; withdraw the army to avoid them—look at the Heavenly Gang. Add the Monthly General to the hour, see which character the Heavenly Gang falls on, to avoid their fierce strength. "If attached to Meng, hide to the right"—Chen is the Heavenly Gang. If it adds to Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai—the Meng spirits—hide and avoid by the right path, auspicious. "For Zhong and Ji, return the army and hide to the left"—Zi, Mao, Wu, You are the four Zhong; Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei are the four Ji. If the Heavenly Gang adds to one of these eight spirits' positions, hide to the left without blame. "Congkui, Xiaoji, Taichong earth"—You is Congkui, Wei is Xiaoji, Mao is Taichong. These three spirits are the three Heavenly Gates of Heaven; further add Chu, Ding, Kai, Wei—the protection of Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door—and with heaven above overlapping, flee to this direction to escape disaster. Add the Monthly General to the hour, see which direction the heaven-plate characters Mao, You, Wei fall on—go toward it to avoid disaster. If you meet a prosperous direction, do not lodge; in spring do not go east, and so on for the rest." Broadly speaking, Mao, You, and Wei are taken as the three Heavenly Gates; but according to the judgment methods in the Thousand-Gold Formula, Gates and Doors can be used to judge whether a male or female child is born, or to judge the gates and doors in a dwelling—so this does not quite agree. Further, according to the Secret Manuscript of Liu Ren: Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door—Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door, ride the divine talisman and pass through the Blocking Gate. The Jade Maiden supports the body, perform the Yu steps and ride yellow and black. Concerning persons who have fled and hidden: if this is met, one can commune with ghosts and gods. Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door—the classic says: "Liuhe is the Heavenly Gate, Taiyin is the Earthly Door. For flight, when Liuhe approaches the day and Taiyin approaches the hour and exits, that is the Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door; the spirit of the fleeing person's year must not overcome it." Liuhe and Taiyin are the way of Heaven; the fugitive who rides them is completely safe. If there are also Jiutian and Jiudi, ten thousand li will be peaceful. Another annotation: "Jiutian and Jiudi each have upper and lower: in spring Yin is Jiutian-upper, Shen is Jiutian-lower; in summer Wu is Jiutian-upper, Zi is Jiutian-lower. In autumn Shen is Jiutian-upper, Yin is Jiutian-lower. In winter Zi is Jiutian-upper, Wu is Jiutian-lower. Taiyin approaches Jiudi-below, Liuhe approaches Jiutian-above; approach the Blocking Gate and exit—the fleeing person will certainly escape the disaster. Blocking is one of the Eight Gates. This gate can be used for flight and escape. The eight gates are Rest, Life, Harm, Block, Scenery, Death, Fear, Open. Exit through Rest and meet a nobleperson and gain wealth. Exit through Life and meet officials auspiciously. Exit through Harm and see bloodshed, encounter thieves. Exit through Block, favorable for hiding and flight. Exit through Scenery, loss of wealth, auspicious within eighty li. Exit through Death, presides over death and mourning. Exit through Fear, encounter lawsuits and fright. Exit through Open, encounter wine and food and promotion." Suppose in the tenth month with the Yin monthly general, on a Renchen day at the Xu hour, divination yields Xiaoji approaching Mao as the moving—this is Gates and Doors in motion: because lawsuits and documents interlock; Zhuque rides Xiaoji and the day as Ghost—affairs are not peaceful, a flight also. In the middle Dengming appears, the general obtains Kongong—it must arise from fraud. In the Jiashen xun, Wu and Wei are the lonely; approaching below the lonely one will certainly hide and flee, ultimately not to be caught. Below Wei Taichong appears, the general obtains Taiyin; approaching below, above the day Chen appears Chuan-song, the general obtains Liuhe—this is the Heavenly Gate. On a Renchen day, in autumn and winter the day is in the seventh palace; Taiyin approaches the Life Gate—the flight will have a good end. Also according to the Thunderbolt Yin-Fu: the Thunder is called the Xun palace because within Jia there is Si. Jiazi escapes to Ji and obtains Si; Si is Xun—within Ren there is Ding-Xun. Within Bing there is Xin—Xun. Within Geng there is Yi—Xun. In general, meeting the dragon means transformation, using the preceding one. Further according to escape: within Jiazi, Ji is the Earthly Door and Gui the Heavenly Gate; within the Jiawu xun, Xin is the Earthly Door and Yi the Heavenly Gate; within Jiashen, Gui is the Earthly Door and Ding the Heavenly Gate; within the Jiawu xun, Ji is the Heavenly Gate and Gui the Earthly Door, and so on for the rest. Also Qimen says: Ding, Ji, Gui—the three stems approaching the Liuhe palace, suitable for flight; approaching the Taiyin palace, suitable for hiding and concealment; approaching Jiudi, suitable for garrisoning and holding. The reason for using Ding, Ji, Gui is that in the Jiazi xun, Ding obtains Mao, Ji obtains Si, Gui obtains Hai. In the Collected Communications of the Penetrating One: "Tianyi's divine light guides the way, the Six Ding Jade Maidens come to support; the Azure Dragon soars ten thousand li, Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door both arrive. Divining flight—the fugitive is blessed and protected." According to the Diagram of Immediate Formation of Returning Closure for the Twelve Bureau Heavenly Gate and Earthly Door: Zi day, Chou day, Yin day, Mao day, Chen day, Si day, Wu day, Wei day, Shen day, You day, Xu day, Hai day Heavenly Gate: Bing Bing Bing Geng Geng Geng Ren Ren Ren Jia Jia Jia Earthly Door: Yi Yi Yi Geng Ding Ding Ren Xin Xin Jia Gui Gui Bing Jade Maiden: Geng Xin Gantry Ren Gui Gen Jia Yi Xun Bing Ding Kun Its principle is to use the directions of the Three Virtues; its use all follows: exit through the Heavenly Gate, enter the Earthly Door, ride the Jade Maiden and go—practically using the joining of Heaven and Earth's virtue.
Verification of Zhang Guande's Ancient Qimen Charts (Part III)
Because repeated verification failed to yield results despite long deliberation, I searched further and found in the texts a saying about "completing eight and becoming a xun" — this doctrine seems to exist. Although not a full xun, completing eight may still not qualify as orthodox, yet perhaps Zhang Guande used this intercalation method, so I deduced further.

Verification Case One: Mr. Zhang Zhongyuan divining about office. In the Yimao year of Xianfeng, Shen month, White Dew, Upper Ju 9, Renwu day, Jiyou hour, hour head Jia Chen. Mr. Zhang Zhongyuan sought a divination about official career; his life destiny was Wuchen, and the day stem was Gui. The Chief was Qin at 8, the Duty Envoy was at Death 9; the Chief clashed, Heaven and Earth were in fan-yin, and the gates and palaces were in mutual restraint.

The final transmission Yin at the front draws out the tomb, so one gets to leave. Moreover, it is a night nobleman —

Qi Men Dun JiaShao Yanhe Case: Jianyan Third Year, Jiyou Year, First Month, Xinsi Day, Zi Officer and Chen Hour — Divining
Supervisor Zhao, born in a Dingchou year on the tenth day of the ninth month at the Chou hour, aged thirty-two, divining about taking up office. Original judgment: Shao Yanhe said: It indicates taking office in the second month of this year. Above the day sits the official star as the nobleman, meeting the fire bureau; metal is pressed by the fire official; the annual age again adds another layer of official star to drive it — he will certainly set off. You must see an elder nearly die from illness and drink, and then it will be fulfilled. The Ding spirit at the residence has already moved; when it comes to the handover, there will surely be some obstruction. After sixteen months he will suffer his father's death and return. Because Zhao was filling in for a previous vacancy, he was urged to take office in the second month. On the second day of the second month his father got drunk and nearly died; seven days later the dispatch indeed arrived. Only in the eighth month was the handover completed, because the previous office-holder demanded Zhao acknowledge a deficit before the handover could be done — hence the delay to the eighth month. In the eleventh month of the following year, he returned for his father's mourning. In total, sixteen months. Generally speaking,
Qi Men Dun JiaIn the Ninth Year of Tiansheng, the Household of Commander Li Was Robbed by Thieves
Judging from the original divination and analysis: Yuan Zhen judged that there were five thieves. One should be a woman around fifty years of age, formerly a servant girl, with an ailment in one eye, living among graves fifty li northeast of the outskirts. Arresting them according to this found nothing. Later Li again requested a divination. Yuan Zhen said there was no need to divine again — one could only infer from the previous lesson. On a Bingding day, order the constables to exit the east gate and turn north to wait; two women in crimson clothes carrying firewood will come — question them and you will surely get the trail of the thieves. As predicted, on the Dingsi day the constables waited until noon; sure enough, two women in red skirts came carrying firewood. When the constables approached, the women panicked and tried to flee. They were seized and searched; gold and silver hairpins and bracelets were found on them. Upon close questioning, they said the neighboring woman was formerly an old servant girl of Commander Li's household; recently, due to poverty, she and her
On the Problem of the Non-Interleaving Chaibu Method in Qimen Dunjia
The chaibu (split-and-supplement) method is actually also a way of adjusting to fit the seasonal nodes; however, because it does not interleave (run), it is not counted as the intercalation method. The chaibu method has quite a few problems. One is the issue of seasonal nodes: when switching configurations, should one take the hour as the standard, or the day? If one takes the hour, minute, and second as the standard, that precisely fits calendar principles — yet this clearly has problems. For example, July 22, 2016 is the Great Heat solar term; Great Heat is clearly 7-1-4. If the Great Heat term has already arrived, and this day is a Yisi day with the previous day being a Jiachen day, and Chen belongs to the lower yuan, one might think it is the lower yuan, and so use configuration four for the lower yuan — this is clearly problematic. The result
Seeking the Winter Solstice Jiazi Direct Grant in Qimen Dunjia
From the perspective of Qimen Dunjia intercalation, casting configurations includes the concept of "direct grant" (zheng shou), with one configuration per hour, totaling 4320 configurations. Qimen Dunjia's 4320 configurations can actually be simplified to 1080 configurations, and 1080 can further be simplified to 72 configurations. The 72 configurations correspond to the seventy-two evenly divided states of the year, that is, the seventy pentads — this is beyond doubt. However, there is a very crucial issue here: the Earth revolves around the Sun, and this time is a tropical year; yet the Earth also rotates on its axis, with an average angular velocity of 4.167×10⁻³ degrees/second, and a rotational linear speed at the equator of 465 meters/second.

Determinations When the Three Wonders Arrive at a Palace
On Ding: When the Six Ding arrive at Qian, it is called “Fire Reaches the Heavenly Gate”—auspicious. On Bing-Ding-Si-Wu days, red cloud qi comes from due south to assist; the guest wins. Another name is “Jade Maiden Roams the Heavenly Gate,” also called “Fire Illumines the Heavenly Gate.” When the Six Ding arrive at Kan, it is called “Vermilion Bird Enters the River”—moderately auspicious. Yellow cloud qi comes from the northeast or southwest to assist; the guest wins.

Qi Men Dun JiaThe Principles of Setting Up the Qimen Dunjia Chart
Common methods for setting up Qimen Dunjia charts circulating in the market include the Leap Month method, the Split and Supplement method, and the Maoshan method. Additionally, there is a school known as Yin Pan Qimen, which uses the lunar calendar to set the chart. Others have created various chart-setting methods in recent times. During the chart-setting process, the most frequent debates revolve around two methods: Flying and Rotating. Those who believe the Qimen chart should rotate often cite ancient texts stating that most stars in the sky rotate, so it should be rotating. Conversely, those who believe the Qimen chart should fly often cite ancient texts claiming that the Nine Palaces originally jump around, so it should be flying. Within this debate between flying and rotating, many controversies have arisen. The result is that the flying method remains flying, and the rotating method still uses flying. The Flying Pan distinguishes clearly between auspicious and inauspicious in single palaces, while the Rotating Pan relies on imagery for representation.
