In the eleventh month of the Bing-Shen year, a fated patron came seeking, saying his business had been dismal for half a year—not a single sale—owing people over a million; he wished for a rapid urging to obtain wealth. I usually dislike this most, for there are no shortage of opportunists. Yet I heard that in the winter month he saw a school student in bitter cold, so with what strength he had he bought several hundred pairs of gloves to give them, feeling he was rather kind-hearted; later I heard many more deeds. So I invited him to write a pledge: if this difficulty were resolved, within three years he must donate a full two hundred thousand for charity, verified only by charity-receipts; afterward he pledged it.

I asked whether toward the southeast, with more heat than cold; he said the fever would not relent, with occasional chills. The illness-talisman method prescribes white paper money sent thirty paces to the southeast—but the patient was far away, so I switched to Zhuyou and one talisman; within less than two hours the fever broke. A woman about fifty had suffered asthma for over ten years, with difficulty breathing during attacks. She was often hospitalized; all manner of medications had little effect. From long illness and medical texts, cold-wind asthma arises from cold phlegm accumulating in the stomach, with the triple burner's fiery qi insufficient to transform it—fire deficiency, earth weakness, earth weakness, metal deficiency—so phlegm lodges within and cough and wheeze rise. This is a slow illness and a chronic one. One Zhuyou session cured it the same day; for a year it did not return. The talisman was not complex—only a few taboo characters to disperse the cold pathogen, drawing southern fire qi into the talisman, dissolving it into water, and drinking it. The speed of effect was due to matching the pattern.
