Heavenly Stem Opening Rule
Take the Jia and Ji months—enter Zaohuo (Dry Fire) into the central palace. Fly forward from the center five to Qian six Bing-Yi, Dui seven Shuiliao (Water Flooding), Gen eight Ziqi (Purple Qi), Li nine Blood Blade. Then from Kan one Taiyang (Great Yang), Kun two Yuebo (Lunar Fiend), Zhen three Jinshui (Metal-Water), Xun four Taijiang (Terrace General). The four configurations are: Dui Ding-Si-You-Chou, Li Ren-Yin-Wu-Xu, Kan Gui-Shen-Zi-Chen, Zhen Geng-Hai-Mao-Wei—these are the four configurations.

Mnemonic Verse on Thunder Combining with Qi
Holding heaven's heart carefully, one pushes and ponders—
When Earth Gang meets, thunder begins to rise.
Among them, the malign luminary Blood Blade must be judged—
Storm winds and driving rain pour down like an overturned cliff.
How can Yuebo endure meeting Shuiliao—
First thunder, then rain, filling the sky.
If Jinshui must meet Shuiliao,
Raising thunder and bringing rain—do not doubt.
Whenever thunder is to be moved, if the year, month, day, and hour fall on Zhen Geng-Hai-Mao-Wei, then the thunder path and the Five Phases contend, and only then may thunder be moved—this is greatly efficacious. It is also said: in the first month Ziqi is at Yin; in the second month Shuiliao meets Mao—this is called having qi.

When selecting days and hours, one may apply them in detail according to this. Observe which direction their positions fall and how the Dao generates and overcomes, and clear or rainy weather becomes evident. Now, yin-yang specialists also know some of these Thunder years and months; those who see the diagram but do not know its flying palaces treat it as a dead formula. Those who can fly and arrange it hold yin-yang in the palm. With these rules, one may pierce to the mystery and add talismanic methods to pray and request. The mystery within the mystery—great prayer must not be taken lightly; one must carefully investigate and examine, so that day and hour are never wrong. Thus it is fully recorded to be handed down to later students: treasure it and hold it in reverence.
