According to a research report published in the journal PLOS ONE, hormonal signals act as the "mediators" between the body's fasting state and the brain's sensation of hunger. Regulating these hormones may effectively address age-related cognitive decline, a method that is somewhat similar to caloric restriction therapies.
Researcher Inga Kadish stated: "This is currently the first paper we are aware of that reveals hunger can reduce the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, although this is based on studies using mouse models. If the mechanisms involved are confirmed, hormonal hunger signals may pave the way for a new approach to treating Alzheimer's disease, which could be achieved through a single method or in combination with caloric restriction."
Caloric restriction is a form of wellness therapy where individuals consume fewer calories than the average, without causing nutritional deficiencies. Studies across multiple species have shown that this method can protect neurons from degenerative disorders and extend lifespan, but these effects have not yet been confirmed in human randomized clinical trials.
Researchers infer that hunger induces moderate stress, which in turn triggers the body's metabolic signaling pathways, thereby combating the plaque deposits that cause Alzheimer's disease. This aligns with the theory of hormesis, which posits that harmful stressors at appropriate levels can be beneficial to the body.
