Lushan Sect's San Nai Teaching Soul-Collecting Technique

The process of the soul-collecting ritual in the San Nai teaching of the Lushan Sect is divided into three stages. First, three incense sticks are used to report to the main deity and other deities in the altar. Then, these three incense sticks are slid up and down over the chest of the startled person while reciting the "Chong Sha Collecting Mantra." The sequence is: first collect Chong, then collect Jing, and finally collect the soul. If Chong Sha is present, the "Chong Sha Collecting Mantra" is recited in full using this procedure. If there is no Chong Sha, for children aged one to two, this method is used, and the immediate collection of Jing is not necessary.

(1) Chong Sha Collecting Mantra:

The Patriarch comes to collect Chong, the Immortal Lady Wangmu comes to collect Chong, the three Imperial Lady Nannies come to collect Chong, the ancestral incense comes to collect Chong. Collect away the Chong from heaven, earth, year (month), day (hour), guests, gold and silver treasures, livestock and trees, and the evil Chong Qi. Lady Nanny collects it away. All disasters turn to dust. By the decree of the Great Nai Lady, swiftly as the law commands!

(2) Jing Collecting Mantra:

The Patriarch (or ancestral) teacher comes to collect Jing, the Immortal Lady Wangmu comes to collect Jing, the three Imperial Lady Nannies come to collect Jing, (whether at the altar or at home) the sacred presence of the altar (or ancestral incense) comes to collect Jing. Collect back the Jing from heaven, earth, year (month), day (hour), livestock (or animals), loud noises, falls on the road, and the Jing from the twelve earthly branches (Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai) and the twelve zodiac signs. Heaven is vast, earth is imperial. Where did the child (girl) become startled? The Great Nai Imperial Lady personally collects it back. Sleep peacefully until dawn. Swiftly as the law commands!

(3) Soul Collecting Mantra (Lady Mantra):

The ancestral (immortal) teacher adds the soul, adding the soul to the child's (girl's) forehead, eyes (nose), left (right) ears, front (back) of the body, left (right) side of the body, left (right) feet, the twelve zodiac souls (Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai), the twelve stellar souls, the souls of the 360 bones and hairs. Three souls connect to seven spirits, seven spirits connect to three souls. The Nanny collects the three souls and seven spirits back, delivering them to the child's (girl's) body. I obey the decree of the Great Nai Imperial Lady. Swiftly as the law commands!

(4) Spirit Calming Divine Mantra:

Heaven is spiritual, earth is spiritual, divine power is spiritual. I respectfully invite the Three Masters and Three Child Attendants of Soul Collection to descend and arrive. Here is XXX (address), disciple 000 whose three souls and seven spirits have scattered. I respectfully invite the Three Masters and Three Child Attendants of Soul Collection, bringing the soul-collecting robe and soul-chasing rice, to recover the three souls and seven spirits of disciple 000. Do not collect the souls and spirits of others. On the path of chasing souls, do not stop. Quickly return the three souls and seven spirits. Three souls return to the body, body at ease; seven spirits return to the person, person clear and bright. I obey the decree of Empress Dowager Chen of Linshui. Divine soldiers, urgent as the law commands!

The soul-collecting process of this sect is quite rigorous. It fears that the startled person may have phenomena such as Chong Sha. Therefore, before the final collection of Jing, the Chong Sha part must be resolved first, then Jing and the soul are collected to achieve twice the result with half the effort. Finally, the soul is settled and the spirit is stabilized, achieving the state where the soul returns to the body, the body is at ease, the spirit returns to the person, and the person is clear and bright.
